IDEAS was chosen to support Airbus North America and AIDT (Alabama Industrial Development Training) in the development of a visionary STEM learning and aviation brand immersion center for the Airbus Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Mobile, AL. The mission of Flight Works Alabama is to advance Alabama’s economic stability and growth by igniting a passion for the sciences and technical trades resulting in STEM-related career interests for Alabama students and every guest who visits, especially in commercial aviation manufacturing.
IDEAS charge was to brand the new facility, develop the identity, curate a diverse collection of aviation manufactures’ contributions of Airbus aircraft manufacturing tools and parts, and design the facility’s Discovery Space, an immersive exhibition hall, with engaging displays and exhibits that teach the physics of flight, the process of designing and building a commercial aircraft, and the many career opportunities available at the Airbus FAL next door at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley.
On a tight budget, IDEAS delivered a wide range of innovative exhibits, attractions, and interactive experiences including a holographic host who introduces visitors to the myriad of careers at the Airbus Final Assembly Line. Visitors can operate a kinetic, fly-by-wire aircraft simulator, fly an Airbus A320 aircraft in a digital flight simulator, explore a real A320 cockpit, experiment with electrical circuit activities, handle unusual aircraft parts, test their ability to paint their own custom livery on the tail of a commercial passenger aircraft, and compete with their friends to see who can install the most rivets correctly in a given amount of time. Flight Works Alabama’s brand immersion and STEM learning center also hosts onsite lab activities like 3-D printing and robotics which have been very well received by both the local and aviation communities.
